Monroe's first election was in 1816, against Rufus King, a Federalist. Monroe had an advantage over King because he was James Madison's Secretary of State during Madison's presidency. Monroe won with an electoral vote of 183 to 34. Daniel D. Tompkins was Monroe's Vice President.
Monroe's second presidential election was in 1820. He was running against John Quincy Adams. He won with an electoral vote of 231 to 1 and he carried 24 states.

James Monroe fought in the Revolutionary War, also known as the American Revolution. The war started on April 19, 1775 and ended on September 3, 1783. America won the war and gained independence over Great Britain.
